A preliminary listing of some educational offerings is presented below.  This page will grow as we gather information on programs being offered in the Calumet Region.

ELEMENTARY "IN SCHOOL" PROGRAMS
Earth Force
Earth Force is a program focused on 7th-8th grade students and their teachers.  This program engages young people as active citizens who improve the environment and their communities now and in the future through action projects.

Getting In Touch With Nature Classroom Programs--Forest Preserve District of Cook County
The Forest Preserve District of Cook County offers free in-school science and nature programs for all Cook County schools. Interactive Getting In Touch With Nature programs, presented by district Naturalists, feature fun, often tactile, classroom presentations that correspond and support Illinois State Learning Standards for science. These classroom programs can enhance or culminate science and nature units, and are effectively paired with the Mighty Acorns program.

Mighty Acorns--Dunes Learning Center, Field Museum, Forest Preserve District of Cook County
Offered to urban 4th-6th graders, the goal of Mighty Acorns is to introduce young people to nature through stewardship and exploration, in a way that fosters a personal connection to Calumet natural areas.  Three times a year, students are led through field experiences that include stewardship and exploration.  Classroom activities and teacher training bolster the program to make it a comprehensive experience in environmental education..

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS
CIMBY (Calumet is My Back Yard)
This service learning project educates high school students about biodiversity and ecosystems, builds their environmental leadership skills, and engages them in natural habitat restoration in the Calumet region of Chicago.  Contact: Jon Schmidt, jjschmidt@cps.k12.il.us, or call 773-553-3425.

Chicago Conservation Corps (C3)--Chicago Department of the Environment
The mission of the Chicago Conservation Corps is to recruit, train and support a network of volunteers who work together to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods through environmental service projects that protect our water, clean our air, restore our land and save energy.  C3 is an initiative of the Chicago Department of Environment, which--in collaboration with Partner organizations--supports C3 Leaders by providing training, technical assistance and resources.
